The Doctoral School of Linguistics offers two four-year long doctoral programmes: an English language one in Applied Linguistics and a Hungarian language one in Theoretical Linguistics. The programmes consist of three main components: courses, weekly consultations with a supervisor, and supervised research, leading to the writing of a PhD dissertation. Compulsory and elective courses include applied linguistics, language pedagogy, language technology, corpus linguistics, pragmatics, sociolinguistics, phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, academic English, qualitative research methodology, quantitative research methodology, etc. Courses are taken during the first two years of the programme, which period is concluded by a complex examination. Consultations with the supervisor are scheduled from the first to the fourth year of the programme. Additional credits must be earned through research activities: conference presentations and research publications.
Further information can be found on the homepage of the Applied Linguistics Programme of the Doctoral School of Linguistics: https://btk.ppke.hu/nydi-applied-linguistics
Applicants are advised to work on their application following both of two paths. On the one hand, collect and upload the prescribed materials (travel documents, degree certificates, language examination documents, health documentation, the research plan, etc.) to the Stipendium Hungaricum (SH) application site. On the other hand, you will need to receive a recommendation letter from a prospective supervisor affiliated with this doctoral school, also to be uploaded to the SH application site – to receive such a recommendation letter, contact the head of the programme or a potential supervisor in the programme via email so that you could find your supervisor. Expect some negotiation about your research plan to receive that recommendation letter.
The Doctoral School and the Doctoral Office will get in touch with the candidates and conduct the entrance interview on a previously designated day in the spring. The entrance interview is usually conducted online.
