The robust presence of the United States throughout the world, well observable in the contexts of politics, economy, and culture, calls for a body of experts who – aside from having excellent English language skills – have a specialised knowledge in the history, politics, society, culture, language, and literature of the United States. With this aim in mind, the American Studies MA program seeks to impart its graduates with the necessary theoretical knowledge and practical skills that can be fruitfully utilised in both private and public sector establishments interested in the communication and/or representation of American values and interests. The two-year long program does not confer teaching qualifications. Students are eligible for admission to PhD programs. In the scope of the Master Course students will have opportunities of preparation for doctoral studies. The aim of this course is to train high-level specialists capable of meeting the specific demands of the labor market in the fields of cultural and intercultural exchange. In addition to local, national or international authorities in the public sector, it is important to underline the growing need for French graduates in the private sector, e.g. with multinational companies. The training will also prepare the student to continue in one of the Doctoral Schools of the Faculty. Our graduates find positions mainly int he sectors of education and research, tourism management, banking and finance, and intercultural communications. This program gives a comprehensive overview over all areas of American studies — literature, culture, politics, history and language – and trains specialists well-versed in both the critical and applied theory concerning the United States of America. Degree holders will have solid skills to conduct independent research, to assess and process relevant information, and communicate their findings according to high academic standards.
Applicants must hold a university bachelor’s degree (or an equivalent college degree) in the fields listed below. Full credit acknowledgement is only given for a bachelor’s degree in English and American Studies.In the case of a Bachelor’s degree in Hungarian Studies, Germanic Studies, Romance Studies, History and Liberal Art, each degree will be considered individually, and transcripts from your BA degree as well as course descriptions will be requested. The applicant must have 50 credits (but at least 38 to enter the programme) from the field of English and American Studies (30 credits from American English language, American literature and culture).The educational and outcome requirements are defined by the Ministry of Human Capacities, Regulation No. 18/2016. Entrance examination and selection processWhen the university receives the full application package and it is checked by the Department of International Affairs an entrance exam date option will be sent no later than the application deadline for the relevant period. Please, check your messages in the application system, and the e-mail address that is linked to the account regularly.The applications are examined by the Admission Board no later than after each application period and applicants are notified of the outcome of the selection in the online application system after the decision is official. Admission letters are sent out in the online application system within a few days. Procedure of the entrance examinationThe entrance exam contains a discussion about the motivation of the applicant. Successful applicants must have a good command of English to pass the entrance exam. The entrance exam can be taken in person or via Skype.Ranking is based on the overall evaluation of academic excellence (based on the submitted documents) and the results of the entrance exam.
